The Apulian pharmaceutical company Farmalabor has been authorized by the Ministry of Health - Central Office for Narcotic Drugs to wholesale of herbal preparations based on cannabis, thus becoming the only pharmaceutical distribution company in Central and South Italy to boast this authorization and one of the two Italian companies to market herbal derivatives of cannabis. The varieties of Cannabis Flos that can be used are Bedrocan, Bedrobinol, Bediol and Bedica, useful for their content of dronabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) in the treatment of various diseases, including ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). The product will be sold to private pharmacies and hospitals for the preparation of masterly preparations on doctor's prescription. In fact, according to the decree of the Ministry of Health of 23/01/2013, doctors can use in therapy not only THC but also the plant compounds that contain it, including extracts and tinctures based on cannabis. The therapeutic use of cannabinoids is permitted by Italian legislation. "It is an important goal for us - comments Sergio Fontana, sole administrator of Farmalabor - which adds to the authorization of 2010, with which the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) has authorized us to produce active pharmaceutical ingredients. Obviously, we will work in full compliance with the regulations and in line with the indications of the Minister of Health Beatrice Lorenzin, who has repeatedly stressed the importance of a highly professional modus operandi when working with cannabinoids, for their pharmacological and political-cultural implications. We will manage these substances with the same quality and safety that distinguishes Farmalabor and the entire Italian pharmaceutical sector, offering patients easy access to official treatment".
